Skiing In Finland: Overshadowed but Still Amazing

There are tons of great things to do on a ski holiday to Finland: dog sledding, the Northern Lights and meeting Santa. Sadly, skiing itself often gets lost in the shuffle of so many unique activities. A look at a few resorts in Finland shows two things: there are tons of great things to do and, more importantly, the skiing is not to be missed!

A Family Paradise

In our sample of Finnish ski resorts we first checked in at Ylläs, a nice resort which has been made affordable by great ski deals. What stands out is the quality of the snow. Crisp temperatures ensure fresh snow is nice and light, and once it falls the resort does a great job of grooming it into stunning pisted runs. This is ideal for cruisers and beginners alike, and for the experts amongst us it offers the chance to get up to some high speeds on the gentle, open slopes. Perhaps the best thing about this resort is that you don’t have to be up at the crack of dawn to get good snow. Uncrowded slopes and ideal temperatures mean that the snow will hold up all day.
We also checked out the resorts at Saariselkä and Levi with similar results. If you venture to Finland to ski you are sure to get great uncrowded skiing on excellent snow. This is ideal for people learning to ski, little ones and families. The black diamond crowd might struggle to find challenging slopes, but they’re sure to get some satisfaction from ripping up the open piste at high speeds.

Some Great Extras

It’s worth heading to Finland for skiing alone, but there are some great other activities available that you can do après-ski or on a day off. Dog sledding in particular is a great excursion as it allows you to see a bit of the countryside and take part in something that you won’t find at home. What’s more, if you have children you can introduce them to a whole new side of their canine friends. Reindeer visits and excursions to see the unforgettable Northern Lights are also amazing trips.

The Real Deal

So if you’re getting ready to ski Finland by all means take advantage of some excellent excursions for you and your family. But don’t let them distract you from the skiing. With great slopes, snow and uncrowded hills, Finland ski holidays are perfect for families and those learning to ski.
